Eight year old Norfolk Academy gymnast Emma Atkin made her debut at a national final in style at the compulsory 4 nationals in Birmingham on 3rd May. Having qualified in style to the final, Emma competed in the second round of the competition, having just missed out on a place in the East’s regional team that competed in the first round. That team took the team silver medals and as the reserve for the team, Emma collected hers with pride. Emma had some excellent pieces of apparatus in her competition bringing in some very strong scores – scoring 12.25 (15th) on vault, finally hitting to her best in competition the strap bar routine (12.80, 15th) and demonstrating a lovely blend of power and elegance on floor (11.90, 11th). She was as surprised as anyone by a very out of character fall on beam and her range seemed a little harshly dealt with, those scores keeping her out of the top few places. Emma’s eventual final placing of 20th in a field of fifty-eight of the best 2005 born gymnasts in the country should give her great encouragement and motivation for future successes.
